Ineffective Supervisors are Probably More Harmful than Ineffective Employees
I recently came across a pretty interesting infographic that talked about ineffective supervisors and it kind of changed my vision a bit. This past month, my focus has been cluttered around how important it is for managers to handle challenging employees. So much so that I stopped considering the fact that managers can be problematic as well. In fact, problems usually occur from the top-down. Ineffective employers create the problems that make employees ineffective for their jobs. It’s not a revolutionary idea, that’s for sure. Still, you know how sometimes you go through phases where you get complacent with a certain kind of thought process? I feel like that has been happening to me this past month. I’ve focused all my efforts on the employee bit of the monitoring, when I should be focusing on how ineffective managers can be the kiss of death for any organization in the world. Here is the infographic that flipped the switch: Essentially, what the infographic has done is describe the bad habits that make a manager fail. And failure is what we try to escape when compose and conduct our management strategies. What bad managers do is… Close their Eyes to Challenges Bad managers will always deliberately stay away from problems and challenges. It’s not that they don’t see them. It is that they see them and choose to stay away. Perhaps the reason for their elusive behaviour is a lack of skills. Perhaps it is the fear of failure. Or perhaps they feel like if they ignore the problem at hand, it will eventually go away. But we all know that that never happens now, does it? We are all familiar with Murphy’s Law: everything that can go wrong will go wrong. So it doesn’t matter if you’re ignoring the elephant in the room. The fact is that it is there and thus has to be addressed. Your employees can only do so much to solve problems. It is you who has the greater power to become a problem solver who then cascades the solution to your staff. Closing your eyes to challenges will never help. Hire Less Talented Resources to Seem More Talented Tale as old as time. An employer will deliberately hire less competent people to seem most competent one in the team. However, this will perhaps be the most destructive practice for the overall revenue generation of the company. Because in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king, and what this employer is essentially doing is gathering a band of blind men for a seeing job. What good does it do anyway? Aside from feeding the manager’s ego, it really has no constructive use. In the millennial style of work, you should be surrounding yourself with people who speak their minds, are hired because of their skills, can pinpoint harmful organisational practices before they get out of hand and are a source of value addition for the company. Does not matter if they are more talented than you are. If you are secure enough in your skills, this stuff should not matter. Now, let’s move onto stuff that ineffective supervisors just can’t do. Can’t Read their Own Employees Bad supervisors won’t be able to read their employees. What does this mean? It means they don’t understand when: An employee is unhappy in their job An employee is ill-fitted for a certain role An employee is overqualified for a certain position An employee is indulging in malpractices An employee is being toxic to the overall environment of the organization An employee needs to be let go from their job And all of this results in ultimate chaos for the rest of the team because let’s face it; they are the ones who have to clean up after every mess created by the management’s bad decisions. So when you’re using your employee monitoring apps to evaluate your employees, take a step back and think about where you stand. Because you could very well be the root of all your company’s problems. I know that’s a hard pill to swallow, but when you’re expecting your own employees to be on top of their game, it is only fair that you do the same.
